Sidney Crosby is going to be chosen first overall in a lot of hockey pools across Canada this week - and the NHL on TSN Fantasy Draft Special proved to be no different on Tuesday night. TSN hockey experts Keith Jones, Mike Johnson, Dave Hodge and Darren Dreger drafted their annual nine-round pool on TSN, and Jones chose the Penguins captain with the first overall pick. Johnson raised a few eyebrows with the next selection, nabbing Ottawa Senators defenceman Erik Karlsson. Hodge, drafting third, chose sniper Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals. Dreger, the defending regular season champion of the NHL on TSN Fantasy Draft, closed out the first round by taking Tampa Bay Lightning superstar Steven Stamkos. The rules required that each expert select five forwards, two defenceman, one goalie, and an additional rookie to make up their squads. The first goalie was picked in the fourth round, as Dreger chose Tuukka Rask of the Boston Bruins. The other goalies to be selected were Jonathan Quick of the Los Angeles Kings (Hodge), Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers (Johnson), and Antti Niemi of the San Jose Sharks (Jones). The rookie class for the draft started with Jones taking Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche. Johnson took Sami Vatanen from the Anaheim Ducks, Hodge picked Jonathan Drouin from the Tampa Bay Lightning, and Dreger chose Winnipeg Jets forward Mark Scheifele. Back in the league for the first time since the Renegades folded in 2006, Ottawa will make its home debut in its new stadium, TD Place, on July 18 against the Toronto Argonauts. The 2014 season will kick off June 26 with Toronto in Winnipeg before the defending champion Saskatchewan Roughriders host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in a Grey Cup rematch June 29. Both Ottawa and Hamilton will play in new facilities this year. The Ticats will open Tim Hortons Field against the Redblacks on July 26. Hamilton will also host arch-rival Toronto on Sept. 1 to re-establish their annual Labour Day showdown.
